Winter Wonderland

Winter Wonderland at Bendrigg Trust

After the success of last years event, we are delighted to announce that the Bendrigg Trust Winter Wonderland is back again for 2021!

After such a fantastic event last year, Santa has asked the Bendrigg Elves to host the Winter Wonderland event again, to help spread some Christmas joy to all!

The Bendrigg Elves have created a festive trail through the accessible 15 acre grounds where people of all abilities can explore and keep their eyes peeled to tick off loads of festive installations! From nutcrackers & reindeers to candy canes and snowmen, the Bendrigg Elves have really gone to tinsel town again for this special event.

Our Yurt will be transformed into Santa’s grotto and although the big man himself won’t be here, one of our very friendly Bendrigg Elves will be waiting to present you with a small gift.

As well as welcoming families again, this year, we’ll also be opening up before the school holidays to Groups and Schools to visit, please see full details under each of the headers below.

If you’d like to support the event in some way you can find out what we really need your help with at the bottom of this page.

Schools and Groups (Mon 29th Nov – Weds 15th Dec)

This year, we are delighted to offer time slots for school groups and other organisations from the local community to come along and enjoy our Winter Wonderland.

Dates & Times

We will have morning (10am – 12pm) and afternoon (1pm -3pm) time slot available for schools and groups to book between Monday and Friday. This will be starting from Monday 29th November through to Wednesday 15th December.

You’ll need to contact us directly to discuss availability and booking so please call 01539 723766 between 9-5 normal office hours.

How Much Does It Cost?

We have worked hard to keep this event as affordable as possible by fundraising, but in order to cover our costs for gifts and staffing, participants (children or adults who would like to receive a gift) will be asked to pay £9.60 per person upon booking. All adults and carers NOT receiving gifts go free.

*Minimum charge for 12 people

*Maximum group size 36 people

What activities are included?

You will have 2 hours onsite with your group to wander around the festive woodland trail which makes an exciting an orienteering activity where you can tick and count the number of “festive installations” as you go.

For group bookings only, each person can also take a ride down our fabulous Tube Slide into our snowball pit at the other end!

Each paid guest will also receive a gift from a Bendrigg Elf in our fabulously decorated yurt and a cookie/mince pie/hot chocolate will be served in the Bendrigg Lodge Dining Room at the end. (This is all included in the price)

Will there be other groups on site?

There will be a small number of other guests staying at Bendrigg for their residential so you may see them out and about enjoying their activities, but this will not interfere with your Winter Wonderland experience.

How can I book a place for my school or group?

If you would like to book please contact our bookings team directly on 01539 723766

Families (Thursday 16th – Tuesday 21st Dec)

Is this only open to people with a disability?

Feedback from our visitors has shown that typical Christmas events can either be inaccessible to people with physical disabilities or incredibly overwhelming for people with sensory impairments or learning disabilities, so we have designed this event to combat this feedback.

We therefore want to prioritise offering bookings to people with disabilities and their families first, as there are not many events available to them which are fully accessible and designed specifically to meet their needs elsewhere.

If we have places left available closer to the time, we may decide to open the bookings up to everyone – the best place to hear about this first will be on our Facebook Page so please follow us to keep posted.

Dates & Times

This event will be held between Thursday 16th – Tuesday 21st December 2021 and you must book a place via our booking portal here to attend (more information below).

Bookings will be available with specific start times to make sure that we do not have crowded areas on site at any time.

How long will does the trail take to walk around?

At a very relaxed pace, the trail will take around 40 minutes – 1 hour depending on the speed you wander.

Will there be other families on site?

To make things as safe as possible for everyone, we are limiting numbers for each start time.

Arrival times have been staggered and families will have 1 hour to explore the trail ensuring plenty of space to explore safely and at your own pace. Our site is spread across 15 acres so even with other families around the trail you will likely not notice there are other people there.

The only other people in the grounds will be Bendrigg Staff and Volunteers.

How Much Does It Cost?

We have worked hard to keep the cost as low as possible for families and are heavily subsidising this event. but in order to cover our costs we will be asking Participants (children or adults who will be receiving a gift) to pay £9.60 per person. You will be asked to pay in full at the time of booking.

All adults and carers (not receiving gifts!) go free.

Will there be any refreshments available?

New for this year we will be opening up the Bendrigg Lodge dining room for simple café food & drinks.

A selection of food and drink will be available to purchase including soup & a roll, tray bakes, hot chocolate, tea, coffee and mulled wine.

Card payment methods will be available.

Will there be an accessible toilet?

Yes, you will have access to a fully accessible toilet before you start the trail where there is a changing bed, shower and hoisting facilities. There will also be another toilet available which can be accessed through the Bendrigg Lodge café.

How do I book my place?

Community Rally To Support Bendrigg Trust Reopening

Cumbria Community Come Together To Support Local Charity Reopening

People from across Cumbria have rallied together in a true show of community spirit to support Local Charity, Bendrigg Trust, with its reopening campaign.

The specialist outdoor centre based in Old Hutton Kendal, has not been able to open for residential visitors since the first lockdown back in March 2020. As a result, the grounds and buildings were in need of some serious TLC and this is when the businesses and people from the community really stepped up to support them.

The Bendrigg Trust is an outdoor centre who work predominantly with disabled people to provide accessible activity holidays for groups, schools, families and adults of any ability.

Martha Wood, from the trust says “Like many places we had to furlough the majority of our staff, meaning the maintenance of our 15 acre site took a back seat whilst we were in survival mode. As soon as we launched the Reboot Campaign and started approaching local businesses for help, the support came flooding in, we have been amazed and are extremely grateful to everyone who has supported us, not only with this campaign but over the last 15 months.”

The trust has an influx of volunteers, including parties from Cumbria County Council SEND social workers and e-learning company Amphigean LTD. In another show of community spirit, around 20 individuals from the community signed up to help with a variety of tasks around the grounds in preparation for the first residential groups returning on the 22nd of June.

In another tremendous show of support, The Breedon Group agreed to gift the Trust 72 tonnes of Aggregate worth over £1000 for the charity to resurface its accessible cycle path. The Roofbox company have made a donation of £1250 which will cover the cost of the digger and dumper hire needed to resurface the path which had overgrown with weeds making it less accessible for disabled visitors.

“Bendrigg has been providing amazing opportunities for disabled people for over 40 years, we have incredible supporters who have helped us through such a difficult time as a charity. But most importantly, it is our visitors who are facing huge challenges themselves, which have only been exacerbated by the pandemic. We want to be here to support them now when they need us the most. It will be amazing to welcome groups back to stay at Bendrigg again, and we are so grateful to our local community for the part they have played in making that happen.”

Thank you to all the individuals and businesses who gave their time, made donations or gave gifts in kind to support the charity including: The Breedon Group, The Roofbox Company, Amphigean LTD, Sealy UK, B&Q Kendal, Homebase Kendal, Asda Kendal, THINK Recycling, Joseph Strong Frazer Trust & Cumbria Community Foundation.

If you would like to make a donation or volunteer for the Bendrigg Trust please contact us on 01539 723766 or email office@bendrigg.org.uk.

Bendrigg Trust Party Night – With DJ Oli On The Decks

There Ain’t No Party Like A Bendrigg Party

DJ Oli bringing the Bendrigg party to you!

Party nights are such a fun part of a Bendrigg residential, everyone can let their hair down, celebrate their achievements together and have a good old boogie! Because we’ve been closed and many groups have missed out on their Bendrigg Residentials and Parties, DJ Oli (a regular Bendrigg visitor and adrenaline junkie) wants to bring the party to you at home and he’s planning to create a very special DJ set just for us.

My name is DJ Oli and I am 15. I Started DJ-ing in 2019. I enjoyed it and now I really love it. I use my eyes and DJ software. I would like to help Bendrigg by putting on a disco for people and hopefully raise some money. Bendrigg means a lot to me, because I go there with 1 voice and my friends. I loved the crate stack, climbing and tube slide.

Please join the party and donate some money it going to be fun!

From DJ Oli

Oli is a 15 year old with a serious passion for music. Oli uses Virtual DJ software which he accesses using eye tracking technology, which he also uses to speak.

Before lockdown, Oli had a full calendar of musical commitments and was hoping to perform a set at No Limits Disability music festival in Barnsley. Unfortunately this was cancelled and Oli’s family have been shielding since March. But he has not let this get in the way of his music-making, Oli has his own Beathubz channel and has been hosting discos and weekly sets on Zoom which he shares with friends. He also DJ ‘s regularly on Social Distance Radio show.

Oli has been coming to Bendrigg for years with his family and friends from the 1 Voice group (A charity for children and families using AAC – Augmentive Alternative Communication). When he heard about the Save Outdoor Ed campaign he wanted to use his passion for music to raise funds for Bendrigg and give people a fun event to attend during what has been a difficult time.

Join The Party

At 6pm on Saturday 13th of March Oli will be DJ-ing his special set live on beathubz with some epic party anthems for you to listen along! We’ll also be hosting a VIP zoom party with breakout rooms for people to dance, chat and get together to have a good time. With a few familiar faces from Bendrigg hoping to also join the party!

Entry is Free

You can enjoy Oli’s music set and join the zoom event for free, but if you’re able to please show some love for DJ Oli and Bendrigg by making a donation via Oli’s fundraising page. All funds raised will go to Bendrigg Trust Subsidy Fund, enabling more disabled people to access adventure activities.

Make a donation via Oli’s fundraising page here : https://bendriggtrust.enthuse.com/pf/dj-oli

How Can I Join The party?

You will need

  • A good internet connection
  • Some sort of smart device or computer to listen/watch
  • Some headphones if you want to join the silent disco
  • The beathubz link and the Zoom link so that you can listen and join the party (we will email you these once you have registered below)

Oli suggests using 2 devices if you can, so that you can join and chat with your communication aid in Zoom and listen/watch/dance to the music on Beathubz. (DJ Oli’s Beathubz channel or here if you have streaming issues) on a separate device. That way you can choose to have a break from the music to chat with your friends or plug into beathubz and join our disco breakout room for a boogie.

Tree Planting Day

As part of the Woodland Trusts Big Climate Fightback Campaign on Saturday 30th November, we pledged to plant 150 trees around the grounds at Bendrigg Trust.

It was a fantastic day with over 25 volunteers of all ages giving up their time to come and help make a difference. Both children and adults had a great time and after all the hard work we had hot drinks and cakes in the sunshine!

We planted a selection of trees and shrubs which were given to us by the TCV –  (The Community Volunteering Charity) who, in conjunction with OVO energy, have given away over 1 million free trees to community groups and charities as part of their I Dig Tree’s campaign.

Thanks to everybody who joined us on the day!
