Party nights are such a fun part of a Bendrigg residential, everyone can let their hair down, celebrate their achievements together and have a good old boogie! Because we’ve been closed and many groups have missed out on their Bendrigg Residentials and Parties, DJ Oli (a regular Bendrigg visitor and adrenaline junkie) wants to bring the party to you at home and he’s planning to create a very special DJ set just for us.

My name is DJ Oli and I am 15. I Started DJ-ing in 2019. I enjoyed it and now I really love it. I use my eyes and DJ software. I would like to help Bendrigg by putting on a disco for people and hopefully raise some money. Bendrigg means a lot to me, because I go there with 1 voice and my friends. I loved the crate stack, climbing and tube slide.

Oli is a 15 year old with a serious passion for music. Oli uses Virtual DJ software which he accesses using eye tracking technology, which he also uses to speak.

Before lockdown, Oli had a full calendar of musical commitments and was hoping to perform a set at No Limits Disability music festival in Barnsley. Unfortunately this was cancelled and Oli’s family have been shielding since March. But he has not let this get in the way of his music-making, Oli has his own Beathubz channel and has been hosting discos and weekly sets on Zoom which he shares with friends. He also DJ ‘s regularly on Social Distance Radio show.

Oli has been coming to Bendrigg for years with his family and friends from the 1 Voice group (A charity for children and families using AAC – Augmentive Alternative Communication). When he heard about the Save Outdoor Ed campaign he wanted to use his passion for music to raise funds for Bendrigg and give people a fun event to attend during what has been a difficult time.

Join The Party

At 6pm on Saturday 13th of March Oli will be DJ-ing his special set live on beathubz with some epic party anthems for you to listen along! We’ll also be hosting a VIP zoom party with breakout rooms for people to dance, chat and get together to have a good time. With a few familiar faces from Bendrigg hoping to also join the party!

You can enjoy Oli’s music set and join the zoom event for free, but if you’re able to please show some love for DJ Oli and Bendrigg by making a donation via Oli’s fundraising page. All funds raised will go to Bendrigg Trust Subsidy Fund, enabling more disabled people to access adventure activities.

How Can I Join The party?

You will need

  • A good internet connection
  • Some sort of smart device or computer to listen/watch
  • Some headphones if you want to join the silent disco
  • The beathubz link and the Zoom link so that you can listen and join the party (we will email you these once you have registered below)

Oli suggests using 2 devices if you can, so that you can join and chat with your communication aid in Zoom and listen/watch/dance to the music on Beathubz. (DJ Oli’s Beathubz channel or here if you have streaming issues) on a separate device. That way you can choose to have a break from the music to chat with your friends or plug into beathubz and join our disco breakout room for a boogie.

Bendrigg Winter Wonderland

Winter Wonderland Event

A Special Winter Wonderland Trail At Bendrigg Trust

Santa has been visiting Bendrigg for many years but this year he has asked us to host a special event that will help to spread some Christmas joy to local disabled people and their families!

The Bendrigg Elves have created a Winter Wonderland trail through our accessible 15 acre grounds where you can explore and keep your eyes peeled to tick off 12 fabulous festive installations! From nutcrackers & reindeers to candy canes and snowmen, the Bendrigg Elves have really gone to tinsel town for this special event.

Our Yurt will be transformed into Santa’s grotto and although the big man himself won’t be here (we think he’s got stuck in the tube slide!), one of our very friendly Bendrigg Elves will be waiting to present you with a small gift.

Thanks to funding from The Hadfield Trust & Windermere & Ambleside Lions, this event is free to attend. However all places MUST be pre-booked on our booking portal. To make things as safe as possible for everyone, bookings will allow a maximum of 1 family bubble (6 people) or one class bubble per time slot. ​Booking arrival times will be staggered by 30 minutes to allow plenty of time and space in-between each family, there shouldn’t be more than 2 families on site at any one time and in our 15 acre grounds you’ll barley notice there is anyone else here.

Dates & Times

This event will be held between Friday 18th – Wednesday 23rd December and you must book to attend. Bookings will be available from 9am in 30 minute slots with last entry at 4:30pm.


How long will we have to do the trail?

The trail will take about 40 minutes to walk around depending on the speed you wander.


Will there be other families on site?

Booking arrivals will be staggered by 30 minutes and families will have 1 hour to explore the trail ensuring safe social distancing along the trail in our 15 acre grounds (you’ll barely notice there is any one else here!). To make things as safe as possible for everyone booking will allow a maximum of 1 family/household bubble up to 6 people per time slot. The only other people in the grounds will be Bendrigg Staff.


How Much Does It Cost?

This event is free of charge, there is no pressure to do so, but if you would like to make a donation there will be a box on the day for cash donations or you can make a donation online here.

Are Bendrigg Covid ‘Good to Go’?

Yes Bendrigg are ‘Covid Good to Go’ and will adhere to all government guidelines to keep you safe. We ask that you please remain responsible ensuring your family do the same in order to keep our staff safe. (Social distancing, face masks inside & hand washing/sanitising) more details will be sent upon booking but if you’d like to read any of our policies please go to our website here.

Group Numbers

Group numbers should be limited to 6 and we ask that you only visit Bendrigg with members of your own household or support bubble unless exemptions apply.

Can you travel to Bendrigg to access this service?

Please do not visit Bendrigg if you or anyone in your household have Covid-19 symptoms. More information on Covid-19 symptoms can be found on the NHS website here.
Currently Cumbria is in Tier 2. Information on the Tier 2 restrictions can be found on the Government website here.

If you live in a Tier 3 area you should avoid travelling to other parts of the UK, including Cumbria which is in Tier 2. There are exemptions to this, for example, ‘to access voluntary, charitable or youth services’. To this end, with the procedures we have in place, we are able to accept families from local, Tier 3 areas who are in need of this service. More information on the Tier 3 restrictions can be found on the Government website here. We ask that you check the guidance and if you believe you come under the exemptions described, we are happy to accept your booking. Might the event be cancelled?

We may need to cancel this event at short notice and we will notify you as soon as possible if this is the case. As the event is ‘free of charge’, we will not need to make any refund to you.

Accessible Activities For Families

Accessible Activities For Families with A Disabled Child

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

As a result of the Covid-19 pandemic we are able to offer some subsidised Family Day Activities for a limited time throughout September and October.

Thanks to funding, Bendrigg can offer some heavily subsidised day activities over the coming months for families with a disabled child. The cost of £144 is for the whole family however at least one child must have a disability and be aged 17 years or younger to access these activity days. Each day is for one family/bubble (up to a maximum of 12 people).

To ensure we support as many people as possible booking is limited to one day per family. Please book your slot using our booking link below and we will be in touch to find out more details about your family (number of people, ages, needs etc.)

Day activities will run from 9.30am-4.30pm and could include a selection of activities such as canoeing, cycling, sensory room, archery, zip wire, orienteering, sensory swing and tube slide. Activity availability depends on a number of factors so not all activities may be available on each day. After booking, one of our Tutors will be in touch with you to discuss your individual requirements and suitable activities.

Tree Planting Day

As part of the Woodland Trusts Big Climate Fightback Campaign on Saturday 30th November, we pledged to plant 150 trees around the grounds at Bendrigg Trust.

It was a fantastic day with over 25 volunteers of all ages giving up their time to come and help make a difference. Both children and adults had a great time and after all the hard work we had hot drinks and cakes in the sunshine!

We planted a selection of trees and shrubs which were given to us by the TCV –  (The Community Volunteering Charity) who, in conjunction with OVO energy, have given away over 1 million free trees to community groups and charities as part of their I Dig Tree’s campaign.

White Stuff Charity Champs raise £15,000 for Bendrigg

Local Kendal shop receives Major Donor Gold Award for contributions towards Bendrigg Trust

White Stuff is a well-known brand worldwide, but back in April 2014 they brought the big-name brand to the little market town of Kendal. Since the opening nearly three years ago, it has gained immense popularity amongst the locals and those a bit further afield, becoming a staple shop for the fashion-conscious residents of the Lake District.

But the shop prides itself on more than selling clothes – it is a big part of the Kendal community. The White Stuff brand builds long-term relationships with local charities all over the country through their Foundation, linking every shop with a charity and supporting them by giving funds, time and material support.

When deciding on Kendal’s charity partner, White Stuff even got Kendal residents involved with the decision, asking people to vote on who the shop’s charity should be back in March 2014. An overwhelming 86% of the vote went to Bendrigg Trust – a local charity providing adventure activities for disabled and disadvantaged people of all ages.

As part of their pledge, the White Stuff Foundation also matches any money raised by the shop for the charity, doubling each donation that Bendrigg receives. This has meant that, since the opening of the shop nearly three years ago, White Stuff Kendal have raised an incredible £15,000 for the charity, earning them the ‘Major Donor Gold Award’ for their contributions.

White Stuff regular Dawn Kirkpatrick, of Beast Banks, praised the shop for their work with the trust:

“I think it’s great how much the staff do for charity, and more shops should be doing it! It’s just another incentive for me to shop here.”

Julie Bond, 28, agrees:

“It’s lovely to see such a recognised brand helping make such a big difference to a small local charity – even the 5p carrier bag charge doesn’t go to the company, it goes direct to the charity!”

The Kendal management team regularly send out staff to the charity’s base in Old Hutton, most recently to help with the development of Acorn House, a completely accessible accommodation unit on their site at Bendrigg Lodge, which you can read about here.

But the team does much more than just helping out around the Lodge; they regularly hold fundraisers instore and even embark on challenging tasks in order to raise money for the charity.

Last summer on behalf of White Stuff, vet student Phil McKean completed the gruelling ‘Total Warrior’ course raising funds for Bendrigg, while other staff from the shop supported him and the charity by marshalling the race.

Phil said about the experience:

“It was by far one of the hardest things I’ve ever done, but one of the most rewarding. I managed to raise £263 for Bendrigg, and I couldn’t have done it without the help from the staff at White Stuff”.

The staff themselves have also braced the adventurous side of fundraising, with two of the shops product advisors, Sarah and Sam, completing the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge back in October 2015, raising an amazing £455. This was then matched by the Foundation, bringing the total to £910.

Manager Emma also ran across 10 of the Lake District’s highest peaks in just 24 hours back in June 2014:

“I travelled over 73km, crossing mountains, streams and bogs, ran in the dark and made it back by 1am! The route covered 5,600m of ascent and included climbing Helvellyn, Scafell and Skiddaw to name just a dfew of the peaks. It was incredible challenging. My poor body!”

Despite the difficulty of the challenge, she says, “it was definitely worth it though – Bendrigg is a fantastic charity who are dedicated to every individual who goes there. They are a very inspirational charity and I feel privileged to be helping raise funds for such a worthy cause.”

Emma managed to raise £442 for Bendrigg, nearly double her target.

Not all the staff at the Kendal shop are able to go to such lengths for charity but they still contribute as often as they can – whether it’s the Cross Bay Walk, knitting a quilt or volunteering at the Lodge.

Bendrigg’s Fundraising and Marketing Officer Sarah Garman told me how much the Trust appreciates White Stuff’s work and support: “White Stuff have raised over £14,500 since starting to support us, and this has had a huge impact on Bendrigg. The funds go towards our core costs which are often the hardest costs to fundraise for. This can include heating, lighting, replacement of equipment, staff costs and so on.

“On average this has meant that donations from White Stuff annually have been around £4,500 – this is around 5% of our annual core cost required – an amazing amount!

“White Stuff are one of just a few corporate partners who support us, but by far donate the most to Bendrigg.”

The Kendal store’s Deputy Manager Joanne Addison says,

“the next step is to to improve on our Donor Gold Award. The one we currently have is for making between £10,001 and £25,000, so the next step would be to reach the Platinum Award of £25,000 and over, which we are most certainly keen to do.”

And with the incredible amount they’ve managed to raise already, it seems like they’ll make it!

Visually Impaired Athletes complete Kendal Triathlon

Bendrigg were pleased to support a number of visually impaired athletes in the recent Kendal Triathlon. All athletes and their sighted guides had a wonderful time and finished with a few even taking home medals! Well done to everyone who competed and thank you to all who came out to support their amazing efforts.
