Lake District Mobility – Making the outdoors accessible for all

All-terrain mobility scooters (Trampers) – at amazing venues around the Lakes and beyond!

Bendrigg are delighted to welcome Lake District Mobility as a guest feature on our blog this week! Penny Swan, the Policy and Funding Officer from Lake District Mobility, has put together some information telling you all about their fantastic mobility scooter hire.

About Lake District Mobility

Lake District Mobility is a charity which aims to make amazing places accessible – meaning that people with restricted mobility can access the fells, lakes and forests of the Lake District with ease. They do this by providing a network of all-terrain mobility scooters called Trampers – at amazing venues around the Lakes and beyond.

The scheme means that anyone with restricted mobility can access a whole range of stunning walks and adventures – forests, rivers, seascapes, gardens, parks, and lakesides. Quite simply, Lake District Mobility are here for anyone who needs a little support to access the great outdoors.

What are “Trampers”?

The special Tramper scooters are easy to use, and can handle hills and rough ground with ease. Trampers are robust, with good suspension that soak up bumps, giving users comfort and peace of mind as they get out into the countryside.

If you’re new to using a Tramper, you’ll be given a short training session when you arrive at the venue to show you how to work the controls. They’re very simple to use!

Where are they located?

Mobility Scooters In The Lake District, UK

Currently users can access Trampers at Grizedale and Whinlatter Forest, as well as the river views at Langdale Spa. Lake District Mobility also have sites opening up soon at Fell Foot park, and at Sizergh Castle.

All the routes have been test-driven by Lake District Mobility, and we like to ensure that the sites that we use have good facilities such as parking, disabled toilets, and easy access to refreshments! Some of the Tramper sites may charge a hire-charge or invite a donation, though most do not. We request that our venues do not charge any more than £2.50 an hour.

Sounds great, how much does it cost and how can I book one?

Access to the network of Tramper scooters costs just £10 a year (or £2.50 for a fortnight’s taster), and membership is open to anyone with short- or long-term restricted mobility – you don’t need to own a blue badge, or disclose anything about a disability.

You can buy membership via the Lake District Mobility website at www.lakedistrictmobility.org – as well as booking your Tramper in advance, and there are how-to videos on our website to help you to make your booking, and showing you round the Trampers so you know what to expect.

You can follow Lake District Mobility on Facebook, Twitter & Instagram @lakedistrictmobility.

Thanks so much to Lake District Mobility for this guest blog! We hope you are able to get out on the Trampers and enjoy all that the great outdoors has to offer.
